Is Print Advertising Still Effective?

You’ve probably heard people say

‘Print is dead’
‘Everything’s online’
‘Nobody reads magazines anymore’

Yet every month, businesses that advertise with Northampton Magazines continue to generate enquiries and raise awareness among local customers.
So, despite the growth of digital marketing, why does print still work so well?

We’re Surrounded by More Content Than Ever

There’s no doubt that people spend a huge amount of time online. Every day we’re exposed to thousands of adverts, videos, posts and promotional messages competing for our attention.
As a result, people scroll quickly and often overlook content without even realising it.
Online marketing can be incredibly effective, but expecting a social media post or online advert to transform your business overnight is often unrealistic. Creating regular, engaging content also requires a significant investment of time and effort.

The Power of Being Seen in Multiple Places

The businesses that achieve the strongest results are often those that remain visible across several different channels.
This is where local print and digital marketing complement each other perfectly.
A potential customer might notice your advert in our magazines prompting them to visit your website or social media page. Each interaction helps strengthen awareness of your business.
Marketing rarely succeeds after a single interaction. Research consistently shows that people often need to see a business several times before they decide to make contact or buy.

Why Familiarity/Longevity Matters

Most people don’t need a plumber, accountant, beauty salon, kitchen company or other local service the moment they see an advert.
However, they do remember names they’ve seen repeatedly.
Because the advert appears within a trusted community publication, that familiarity is often reinforced by the credibility of the magazine itself.
Research has shown that many people have become increasingly blind to online advertising, often scrolling past promotional content without paying attention.
A local magazine, however, often remains in a home for weeks or even months and maintains visibility. It might sit on a coffee table, kitchen counter or bookshelf, picked up and read multiple times before the next edition arrives.
That means your advert has numerous opportunities to be seen, helping to build recognition and trust over time.

So, Is Print Dead?

The reality is that print and digital marketing are not competitors—they work best together.
For many businesses, local print advertising remains a highly effective way to build awareness, increase visibility and generate enquiries.
Print isn’t dead. It’s simply evolved. When combined with digital marketing, local print advertising remains a powerful way to build awareness, stay visible within the community and ensure your business is remembered when customers are ready to buy.
