Views sought on the renewal of anti-social behaviour measures at Marble Arch – Northampton
Members of the public are invited to share their opinions on the renewal of the Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) in the Marble Arch area of Northampton.
A consultation started today (Wednesday, 29 July) is asking residents to have their say on whether the current Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) should be renewed for a further three years.
Council’s existing PSPO came into force in January 2018 and allowed the gating of the highway known as Marble Arch, which runs from Ash Street to Barrack Road. The order is looking to protect residents from anti-social behaviour by deterring littering, fly-tipping and street drinking in the area and is due to expire in January 2021.
Enforcement of the Order would be carried out by the Council and Northamptonshire Police. Any breach of the Order would be a criminal offence with a possible fine of up to £1000 or prosecution.
Councillor Anna King, Northampton Borough Council cabinet member for community safety and engagement, said: “Nobody deserves to have their quality of life disrupted by anti-social behaviour and we do everything we can to make sure that Northampton continues to be a safe and enjoyable place to live and work.
“Even though our community engagement events have been postponed due to coronavirus outbreak, we are still here, and we are still keen to find out how we can improve your wellbeing.
“It’s really important that you let us know your concerns via this public consultation so that we can take action. The questionnaire only takes a few minutes to complete and I urge as many people as possible to take part and have their say.”
PSPOs provide councils with flexible powers to address a range of anti-social behaviour issues in public places to help prevent future issues. Restrictions can be placed on an area where activities have a detrimental effect on the quality of life of local people
Anyone wanting to share their views on the proposed PSPO, can take part in our online questionnaire at www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/
People can also request a paper copy of the questionnaire: Community Safety, Northampton Borough Council, The Guildhall, St Giles Square, Northampton NN1 1DE, or by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org
The consultation will remain open until 21 October 2020.
