Garden waste collections in Northampton Borough will become a chargeable service from
Monday 6 April 2020.
Households that wish to continue having their garden waste collected each fortnight will
need to subscribe to the service and pay an annual fee of £42 per bin. Subscription to the
paid-for garden waste collection service is not compulsory.
Residents who sign up to the subscription service will receive fortnightly garden waste bin
collections, or those using sacks, will receive the equivalent of two black sacks collected
once a week, across 50 weeks of the year. A two-week break around Christmas is planned,
as usual, to allow for the free collection of Christmas trees and additional recycling from the
festive season.
Residents can purchase subscriptions for more than one bin or for extra black sack labels.
Garden waste collections are not a statutory service that councils are required by law to
provide and not everyone uses the service, so by charging an annual fee we will be able to
keep the collections going for those who still wish to have them. The last free garden waste
collections are scheduled to take place during weeks beginning 23 and 30 March 2020.
The paid-for service will then begin from 6 April, with garden waste collections continuing
on a fortnightly basis for residents with wheeled bins. Residents who have their waste
collected in sacks will still be able to book their collections online as required.
Residents can also take their garden waste to their local Household Waste and Recycling
Centre or compost it at home instead. Compost bins are available at your local garden
centre or online.
Each household that has subscribed to the paid-for-service will receive a sticker with a
unique reference number to place on their bin or sacks.
Those who do not subscribe can reuse their brown bin for storage or turn it into a water
butt. Alternatively, residents can request a brown bin collection on our website
Residents can subscribe to the service at any point in the year, however no reduction will be
offered for those subscribing part way through the year and early subscription is
recommended to ensure minimal disruption.
