Northampton’s only specialist dementia day care, set to open in St James.

Affinity Day Care C.I.C. is opening their second day centre for older adults on 7th June 2021 at St. James Community Centre. The centre is being specially designed for older adults with dementia and will be the only day centre in Northampton offering specialist care.

Following huge demand since opening their first site at St Luke’s Community Centre in December 2020, Affinity Day Care C.I.C. are expanding their service which will be available at their St James site every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 10:30am – 3:00pm.

Fern Overton, Director, Affinity Day Care C.I.C. explains:

“We knew there was a need for day care in Northampton but didn’t expect demand to be so high. Our St Luke’s site is now full 5 days a week and we have a waiting list with assessments being completed every day.

“We know from demographic statistics that we’re seeing a large increase in the over 50’s age group in Northamptonshire, due to the post-war spike in birth rates and increasing life expectancy, so we need to be at the forefront of modern care for older adults.

“We are delighted to be opening the specialised dementia site and have lots of plans to ensure the care is person-centred and stimulating.

More than 920,000 people in the UK are living with dementia, which is an umbrella term for loss of memory, language, problem-solving and other thinking abilities that are severe enough to interfere with daily life. According to the Alzheimer’s Society, this number is expected to rise to over a million by 2024.

The day centre at St James will cater to individuals with high dependency needs. A variety of activities will be available including sensory activities, rummage boxes, baby therapy, reminiscent activities, singing, dog and cat therapy and excursions. Those with wandering tendencies, (which is a common symptom of dementia), will be able to do so safely in an environment supported by trained carers.

The service will be offered at £45 per day which includes transport to and from the centre, a nutritious two-course lunch, activities, refreshments, outings and professional care.

Affinity Day Care C.I.C. also offer a support group for carers of those with dementia every Tuesday at St Luke’s Community Centre. It’s an opportunity for carers to connect with others, enjoy some freshly made cake and feel support from other carers who understand the pressures and rewards associated with informal care.
