Annual Health Checks for People with Learning Disabilities

Did you know that anyone aged 14 or over who is on their GP’s learning disability register
can have a free annual health check once a year?  Only just over half of those eligible for
these checks in the county currently take them up, and Voluntary Impact Northamptonshire
and Northamptonshire Carers are working with Northants CCG to encourage more people to
go for their checks.
People with a learning disability often have poorer physical and mental health than other
people. This does not need to be the case. Having  an annual health check helps adults
and young people to stay well by talking about their health and finding any problems early
on, so that they get the right care.
You do not have to be ill to have a health check – in fact, most people have their annual
health check when they are feeling well.
If you or a person you care for would like to have a health check, but are worried about
seeing a doctor, or there’s anything they can do to make your visit better, let the doctor or
nurse know.  For more information on annual health checks, or to find out more about the
work that we are doing, please contact Luisa or Becky at  LuisaJ@northamptonshire-
