International Men’s Day will be celebrated in the town this year with a health event on the Market Square during Saturday, 17 November.
Opening at 11am, the event will feature stalls from local health and support organisations with the aim of raising awareness of how men can stay fit and healthy, both physically and mentally.
Local men and their families are encouraged to get involved on the day by visiting stalls from organisations like Northampton Leisure Trust, who will be holding fitness challenges throughout the day, as well as conducting free health checks for those who want to find out more about their heart age and health.
Advice and information will also be given by Northampton Mind, Northampton Prostrate Cancer Support Group, the Home Town project and the new Happy You project.
Northampton Male Choir will be providing the entertainment for the day and the Mayor of Northampton, Councillor Tony Ansell, will be onsite at lunchtime to announce the winners of the first Male Role Model of the Year Awards.
Councillor Anna King, Cabinet member for community engagement and safety, said: “This International Men’s Day we wanted to find ways of bringing information and advice to men, to make it easier for them to learn more about how best to look after their health.
“We hope lots of men, boys and their families join us for a free hot drink on the Market Square and to enjoy the free entertainment, challenges and services on offer.”
Chris Patching, Active Lifestyles Development Officer for Northampton Leisure Trust, said: “International Men’s Day event is a fantastic opportunity to raise awareness of men’s mental and physical health. Trilogy Health & Fitness are proud to be supporting this event and will be offering free health and lifestyle advice from a health professional and the opportunity to book a free NHS Health Check at one of our centres.”
